Dental Crowns

Restore strength, function, and beauty to damaged teeth with custom-crafted dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a damaged, weakened, or aesthetically compromised tooth. The crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

Crowns are one of the most common and reliable restorative treatments in dentistry. They are used to protect teeth that have been significantly decayed, cracked, or treated with root canal therapy, and they can also be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of misshapen or severely discoloured teeth.

Types of Dental Crowns

At All Smiles Dental Care, we offer several types of dental crowns to suit your needs:

  • Porcelain crowns — highly aesthetic, ideal for front teeth
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) — combines strength and appearance
  • Zirconia crowns — extremely strong and natural-looking
  • E-max crowns — premium all-ceramic option with excellent translucency

When Is a Crown Needed?

Your dentist may recommend a crown in the following situations:

  • A tooth with extensive decay that cannot be supported by a filling
  • A cracked or fractured tooth that needs structural reinforcement
  • A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
  • A dental implant that requires a prosthetic tooth
  • A severely discoloured or misshapen tooth for cosmetic improvement
  • An anchor tooth for a dental bridge

The Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown typically requires two visits. During the first appointment, your dentist prepares the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where your custom crown is fabricated. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.

At your second visit, the temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is carefully fitted, adjusted for bite and comfort, and permanently cemented in place. With proper care, a well-made crown can last ten to fifteen years or longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a crown hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the appointment. Some mild sensitivity after the procedure is normal and typically resolves within a few days.

How long does a dental crown last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, crowns typically last between ten and fifteen years. Some patients keep their crowns for twenty years or more.
